0303 Bornplatzsynagogue, Hamburg, DE
Recently Atelier Kempe Thill got the third prize for an international three-stage competition. The tender had two focuses. The reconstruction of the Bornplatz synagogue, an orthodox temple that was destroyed during the Kristallnacht. And next to it, the design of a new building serving a liberal jewish community, in the Grindel district of Hamburg. The Atelier Kempe Thill–Thörner Kaczmarek team proposed to careful rebuilt the destroyed Bornplatz synagogue. This by re-using the still existing foundations and the re-use of existing original building materials in combination with a new interior concept. The liberal synagogue and a building for amenities are both new and form together with the orthodox building a new spatial ensemble for the Jewish communities of Hamburg.
