STEPS is a new skills and training center, providing a high-tech learning environment for medical staff. In addition to teaching rooms, the building accommodates virtual reality and augmented reality operating rooms and various practice spaces for medical treatment. Located at the edge of the Gasthuisberg campus in Leuven, Belgium, it stands prominently on the ring boulevard—the main access road to the campus. The building is characterized by very flexible, freely divisible high floors, which allow it to easily anticipate future changes in educational concepts. At ground level, the central entrance hall is also used as an informal learning environment and a café. Atelier Kempe Thill received the commission for this project after taking first prize in the competition.
