In early 2019, Atelier Kempe Thill, in collaboration with Origin Architecture & Engineering of Brussels, was invited to participate in an open call by the Flemish bouwmeester for the transformation of the famous opera house in Ghent, Belgium, into a new multifunctional cultural center. Our team proposed to open the houses toward the city, add a new chamber music hall with a panoramic view of the city, and reorganize the logistical zone in a more contemporary way. Further, we wanted to reconstruct the early nineteenth-century interior of the main auditorium and worked on a precise strategy to reinforce the sustainability of the complex. The proposal received an honorable second prize.
