“De Vrijheid”, situated on an inner plot of the former Bijlmerbajes prison from the 1970ties, is a new social housing tower. It is part of the Bajeskwartier masterplan, designed by O.M.A., Fabrications and Lola Landscape architects, that turns the jail site into a new housing estate with more than 1100 homes. The new, very compact building offers space for 140 social rent apartments in various sizes. It is part of the central building cluster consisting of a four high-rise buildings ensemble. 'De Vrijheid' integrates the listed prison wall into its structure. It is designed around a big central atrium that functions as entrance hall, social connector and interior garden. All apartments, built according to the highest environmental standards, have large balconies in combination with sliding doors. The two green roof terraces offer the tenant’s not only additional communale outside spaces but also a splendid view of the surroundings.
