0166 BMW FIZ Future, Munich, DE
The BMW Group Research and Innovation Center (FIZ) in Germany is the BMW Group’s technological heart. It is the place where BMW carries out its R & D activities. The site is located in the two Munich boroughs of Milbertshofen-Am Hart and Feldmoching-Hasenbergl. The objective of Atelier Kempe Thill’s and West 8’s design proposal, which won third prize, was the preparation of a master plan for the long-term development of the Research and Innovation Center. In 2014, the BMW Group employed a staff of over 26,000 at this location. The BMW Group’s continuous growth and technological changes—such as the emergence of e-mobility, novel materials, and increasing interconnection—as well as new working time and workplace paradigms necessitated medium- and long-term restructuring and expansion.
Thus, extra area to the extent of approximately 26 hectares was acquired, and together with parts of the existing development it needed restructuring. In line with the disposition of the present-day FIZ, the new development includes areas for research, workshops, studios, and offices, plus additional functions for joint use by BMW and the neighborhood.
