In 2013, Atelier Kempe Thill won the “open oproep” (open call) of the Flemish Government Architect for the refurbishment of the De Zande borstal in Ruiselede near Ghent, Belgium. The design task of the since cancelled project was the realization of six group accommodations for about eighty adolescents within a monumental classicist factory building from the nineteenth century. Next to the creation of a convenient living environment for the inhabitants, the existing building was to be adapted to contemporary climate and low-energy standards.
