Over the course of a decade, the new city quarter Antwerp Nieuw-Zuid is being realized along the river Scheldt in the southwest of Antwerp, Belgium, as a high-quality extension of the historic city center. The “bigger and cheaper” housing project by Atelier Kempe Thill was completed as one of the first implementations. The housing project contains 32 flexible winter garden apartments and commercial spaces on the ground floor built on a collective parking garage. The apartments vary in size from 40 to over 160 square meters. All have, on at least one side, an excellent outside space of more than 25 square meters that can be closed during the rainy season with movable glass partitions. The apartments were built as low-energy passive housing for a relatively small gross building price.
