0068 Hofpleinlijn, Rotterdam, NL
Over time, the arches underneath the former Hofplein railway line became rundown and gritty, an example of uncontrolled and individual building activity that is almost unknown to Dutch standards. Atelier Kempe Thill’s proposal included a new layout of the arches so as to contribute to a more positive atmosphere for the neighborhood, achieved by a thorough “facelift.” In the design, this facelift is accomplished by replacing the façades of the arches with full glass windows; the windows create an open, pleasant look and emphasize the historical character of the railway line.
