Schloss Freudenstein in Freiberg, Saxony, Germany, is a Renaissance palace that was transformed into a classicist warehouse in the early nineteenth century. The façades were gutted, the windows scaled down, and the height of the floors reduced. The museum is now being transformed into a facility for mineral specimens and a regional archive for mining history. The façades with their very small windows were the point of departure that Atelier Kempe Thill adopted in their design proposal, which won fourth prize in the competition. The massive character of the building was encountered as a positive quality. Only in the ground-floor areas would new windows be installed that open up the inner courtyard. In the proposal, the museum interior is organized as a ring, with high exhibition spaces.
